Summary

The National Security and International Policy (NSIP) department at American Progress is devoted to generating pragmatic and progressive policy ideas to advance and protect U.S. national interests and drive solutions to key transnational challenges. The department’s work focuses on several crosscutting priority research areas, including democracy and accountability, human security, international climate action, and economic security and competitiveness. This work is both global and regional, drawing on NSIP’s expertise on transnational and regional trends and challenges.

This position is ideal for a candidate with a successful track record of managing and overseeing organizational operations and who is committed to American Progress’ mission to improve the lives of all through bold, progressive ideas and leadership that changes not only the conversation, but the country. The Director or Senior Director will ensure that department operations maximally strengthen American Progress’ work in the areas in which the department’s staff are most engaged and support American Progress’ five crosscutting priorities:

  • Strengthening health and ending the pandemic
  • Building an economy for all
  • Tackling climate change and environmental injustice
  • Advancing racial equity and justice
  • Restoring social trust in democracy

Responsibilities:

  • Partner with NSIP’s Senior Vice President on strategic planning and execution of the department’s policy, outreach, and advocacy agenda in alignment with American Progress’ five strategic priorities.
  • Assist with the management of NSIP staff.
  • Oversee the department’s general operations, administration, and budget, in concert with other efforts to support American Progress’ overall operations.
  • Conceive and oversee execution of the department’s public engagement strategy, including public events and social media, in coordination with American Progress’ Communications and Advocacy and Outreach departments.
  • Coordinate NSIP event planning and preparation through to completion.
  • With the Senior Vice President of NSIP, provide editorial oversight of the department’s written products.
  • Represent the department with press, policymakers, academics, and other outside stakeholders as appropriate.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements and qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience; a master’s degree in international relations or a relevant field is preferred.
  • Seven to 10 years of political, government, or nonprofit management and operations experience for the Director role; at least 10 years of experience for the Senior Director role.
  • Demonstrated expertise in leading departments and diverse teams and managing complex projects.
  • Excellent judgment in navigating complex issues and making difficult decisions.
  • Significant national security expertise is required, as demonstrated by previous professional foreign affairs accomplishments in government, academic, or research settings.
  • Demonstrated excellence in research, editing, writing, and analytic ability in order to provide guidance and mentoring to staff at all levels.
  • Highly effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Highly skilled at multitasking and prioritizing appropriately to ensure timely and professional execution of department objectives.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well on a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Commitment to American Progress’ mission and goals.

The Director minimum compensation for the Director role is $92,000. The minimum compensation for the Senior Director role is $112,000.
