Summary

American Progress is seeking a Donor Relations Manager to join the Development department. Reporting to the Vice President of Development, the Donor Relations Manager is an important member of the department and will help support American Progress’ fundraising efforts, including board engagement. The Donor Relations Manager will provide administrative support to the CEO, Chief Development Officer, and Executive Office related to the management of their portfolios, prospect research, board engagement, and recruitment.

The Development department works with program staff at both the Center for American Progress, a 501(c)(3) organization, and its affiliated organization, the Center for American Progress Action Fund, a 501(c)(4) organization.

Responsibilities:

  • Support the management of the CEO, Chief Development Officer, and Executive Office’s development portfolios, including researching prospects, drafting donor profiles and briefings, record maintenance, and data entry.
  • Support the Chief Development Officer and Vice President of Development in executing their responsibilities related to the CAP and CAP Action boards’ governance, nomination, and development efforts in coordination with the Corporate Secretary, such as committee administration, member outreach, board candidate pipeline maintenance, and more.
  • Manage systems and software to track and cultivate donors and prospects, including the organization’s donor database and wealth screening tools.
  • Work with the Development department to align efforts and set goals.
  • Maintain departmental files, documents, and procedures.
  • Assist in the in-house logistical planning of special donor events, including managing the guest list, supporting registration, and coordinating production of materials.
  • Draft, edit, and proofread a broad range of materials for current and prospective donors.
  • Track and report progress using specific metrics.
  • Partner with the Prospect Research Manager to prepare briefing materials for the Executive Office.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements and qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, or equivalent experience is required.
  • At least five years of relevant work experience in development and fundraising, with particular preference for experience in board administration or donor relations/stewardship.
  • Demonstrated entrepreneurial ability to develop alliances and coordinate shared interests of all parties.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills designed to meet the challenges of the organization.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with considerable experience in writing and presenting information to a variety of audiences.
  • Ability to use data and customer relationship management (CRM) systems to support fundraising strategy and priorities, measure outcomes, and drive superior performance.
  • Knowledge of various progressive philanthropic and political sectors including racial equity, rights, justice, international affairs, public health, education, or democracy is desirable.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical and prospect research skills.
  • Strong interpersonal, mediation, and facilitation skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and multitask in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team.
  • Ability to work additional hours as needed to meet deadlines and manage workflow.
  • Support for the mission of American Progress and commitment to a broad progressive agenda.
